Free colorectal cancer screening for people in Hanoi

In November 2017, Thu Cuc International General Hospital cooperates with Hanoi Authorities and Hanoi Department of Health to providethe people of Hanoi withfree colorectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rate have been increasing recently in Vietnam

Colorectal cancer is among themost common types of cancerswhich are also one of the leading causes of mortality. In Vietnam, colorectal cancer is one of the five most common types of cancer, which has been on the rise in recent years, especially among young people. It is also the third most common type of cancer after lung cancer and breast cancer.

CRC is among the common types of cancer in Vietnam

Early detection of CRC can increase chances of survival up to 90%. Therefore, cancer screening is the key to saving your lives from the death sentence named “colorectal cancer”. The purpose of cancer screening is to detect polyps andprecancerous lesions and completely remove them to prevent the development of cancer. The 5-year relative survival rate for early-stage colon cancer and rectalcancer is respectively 92% and 87%.Thus, early diagnosis of the disease is the most important factor and prerequisite to the result of treatment.

For the early detection of colorectal cancer, increasing the chances of survival for cancer patients, Thu Cuc International Hospital in collaboration with Hanoi Authorities and Department of Health implemented the program of providing free colorectal cancer screening for the people in Hanoi. Accordingly, from 11/2017, free examination for early CRC detection is delivered to people in different districts in Hanoi, starting from Tay Ho District.

People are screened for early CRC detection

The people in Hanoi will be provided with fecal occult blood test (FOBT) which detects hidden blood in stool and it is recommended to bedone annually for CRC screening. Thu Cuc Hospital has been equipped with a Japanese high-tech device named OC-Sensor Pledia(reagent is included). This device is among the latest ones and up to 320 samples per hour can be analyzed and 100.000 results of samples can be saved. Hence, the device can satisfy a high demand for laboratory tests and automatically identify the sample code.

It should be noticed that fecal occult blood test is not conclusive because there are different sources of bleeding such as ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoid, etc. However, FOBT is a clinical screening to suggest the doctor for further test such as: endoscopy, CT scan and biopsy.
