Thu Cuc Hospital offers 20,000 free motorcycle helmets to elementary school students

On 13th December 2016, Thu Cuc International General Hospital together with Central Youth Union launch the program  “Safe kids – Happy families”, offering 20,000 good quality helmets to elementary school students.

According to recent statistics of the World Health Organization, road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death and injuries in Vietnam. Among accident victims, children are vulnerable subjects. Motorbikes are the main mode of transport in large cities of Vietnam, therefore, wearing motorcycle helmets is required and this is a simple and cost saving safety method. Helmets reduce risk of serious head injury by nearly 69% and death by around 42%. However, in the country, while 90% of adults wear motorcycle helmets, only less than 50% of children get this habit. That shows parents are not really concerned about their children’s transportation safety. 2,000 children killed in road accidents every year makes adults, especially parents more aware of their children’s safety during transportation.

As an enterprise which has fulfilled its various responsibilities of social welfare since establishment, Thu Cuc International General Hospital wishes to contribute its part to ensure the safety of children during transportation on the road, preventing unexpected injuries. Together with Central Youth Union, Thu Cuc Hospital will present 20,000 motorcycle helmets to elementary school students in Hanoi and surrounding provinces. Through this program, the Hospital wishes to increase public awareness of wearing helmet to protect the children’s safety as well as ensure the happiness of every family.

It is necessary that not only parents but also children are aware of the importance of wearing helmets when travelling on the road. Understanding that, the school in general and teachers in particular often have a major influence on elementary school students, Thu Cuc Hospital has taken the advantage of this and chosen primary schools as the places where free helmets would be given to children.
